Ping Redwood Anser Putter Review
The Ping Redwood Anser begins with the company’s time-tested model, the Anser style with a full shaft offset plumber’s neck hosel. Everything else marks a break from company tradition.
This is a part of Ping’s first line of milled stainless steel putters, which also includes the Redwood D66, Redwood Piper, Redwood Zing and Redwood ZB models. The engineering gives the club a more solid feel than the traditional Ping cast models, and produces a denser and heavier clubhead.
Many golfers may find that the added weight helps keep the club steady at impact, eliminating some of the swing glitches that cause shots to roll offline. The steel head causes the ball to release faster than on models with inserts, so a putt doesn’t need to be struck quite as hard to get it where it needs to go. Between that and the added weight, the Ping Redwood Anser helps reduce the need to overswing on longer putts, as a little effort goes a long way.
Mark Calcavecchia is among the PGA Tour professionals who has used the club, and judging by the amount of money he’s earned it appears to have worked just fine at the highest level of competition.
