The i Series by Ping

The i Series is a brand new line of putters that won’t ship to retailers until November of 2007. All the putters in this product line will have a two piece insert system, consisting of a urethane insert with a thinner material on top of the urethane. This technology is used to give good feedback to the golfer, in other words a soft feel and good sound. There are a total of 10 models available with the i Series technology, including old standards like the Anser and Zing, as well as the Piper, B60, Craz-E, ½ Craz-E, and ½ Moon models.

The Karsten Series

These putters are of course named after Karsten Solheim who was the founder of Ping. Again, this is a brand new product line which won’t begin shipping to retailers until October of 2007. The faces of these putters are made of steel, and an elastomer insert is added into the face in the ball contact area. Weight has been redistributed to the perimeter of the club head which increases the club head moment of inertia (MOI), and this adds forgiveness on off-center hits. These putters also have what is called a mult-level alignment aid. The thin and rectangular top edge of the putter contrasts to the aiming lines in the back cavity to make alignment easier. There are seven models to be offered in the Karsten series including the Anser, Anser 2, B60, B67, Zing, Craz-E, and Piper models of putter heads.

The Redwood Series

This series is named after Redwood City, California, where Karsten Solheim started working on putters in his garage, and this was the start of the Ping company. These putters are all milled from 303 stainless steel. Some golfers like the feel of a milled putter. Three traditional models are offered in this format, the Anser, Zing, and Piper.

The JAS Craz-E One

This is a new addition to the JAS line of putters. This putter has a shape that somewhat resembles some of the two ball putters on the market today, but it does not use balls as alignment aids. It does have a rectangular alignment aid on its large back plate. The putter head is made of lightweight C805 aluminum, and 4 heavy tungsten weights have been added to the perimeter, which creates a very high MOI. In fact the JAS Craz-E One has the highest MOI of any putter in the Ping lineup, so it is therefore the most forgiving putter in the entire product offering. The color is deep black and it has a modern appearance. I would say it is quite attractive looking.

Kombi

Do you blame your putting, shots and swings for your golf missed shots and high scorecard results? Well, no matter how much time and effort you have been spending practicing to perfect your game of golf, you will always be handicapped from reaching your goal if you are using wrong or defective items of golf equipment.

To really improve your game, you should consider the following golf tips that involve checking your golf equipment's condition and quality.

If you are constructing your set of golf clubs by purchasing used golf clubs and putters then make sure that you inspect them carefully before you hand over any money. Inspect all parts of the golf club or putter, for wear and damage, including the club head, the shaft, and the grip. Another golf tip that will improve your game is to make sure that the clubs form a matched set. You don't want to mix and match golf clubs and putters if you want to achieve consistency in your game. Also make sure that you find out the new price of the club or putter first, so that you know if the used club is good value for money. You might also want to check in advance, the cost of repairing a club so that you can take this into account as well. A golf tip for any golfer who is contemplating to re-grip his clubs: Take great care as the golf club grip is the only point of contact on the club that you can use to influence your shot. This is even more true when re-gripping golf putters. So before beginning any replacement of a grip, measure the core grip of the club together with your hand grip size.

To determine your golf club's core size grip, measure the diameter of the butt of the shaft that you're going to re-grip. The grip's core diameter should match the diameter of the shaft. The steel club shafts are preferred by professional golfers while the graphite shafts have are popular with women, senior players and beginners. Because of its bearing on your golf handicap, putting has caused more inventiveness in search of perfection than anything in the game. Players have all sorts of styles and movements, all unique to the individual. Despite these innovative efforts, one thing remains true: there's no substitute for a sound putting stroke.

Below we describe the putting technique of two professional golfers-Isao Aoki and Nick Price. They've adopted different putting styles, yet both are considered excellent putters.

The Setup

Japan's Isao Aoki posses a superb putting stroke locked into a strange and individual style. Nevertheless, he is renowned putter. In fact, putting is probably the best part of his game. Aoki addresses the ball with the top of his putter high in the air. His hands are low and he crouches over significantly.

Nick Price' style, on the other hand, is more classic. His technique is based on a locked left wrist and a shoulder-dominated stroke. At address, he keeps his shoulders square to the intended line, and his hands over or just ahead of the ball. He crouches slightly over the ball, but not nearly as much as Aoki.

Despite the differences in style, both players do one thing all great putters do at address-they keep their eyes directly over the ball. It's the most important ingredient in the setup, irrespective of a person's height, build, or style. Keeping you're eyes directly over the ball and turning your head allows a direct view down the line to the hole, without any need to move the shoulders out of alignment.

The Stroke

Aoki is a touch putter, so he uses his hands more than his shoulders, and takes the club back steeply, with the right hand controlling the takeaway. At the top of the backswing, his putter is high off the ground-an unusual position for a good putter. Nevertheless, it works well for Aoki. His stroke is smooth and rhythmical.

Price's technique is based on a shoulder-dominated stroke. His arms, shoulders, and putter move away from the ball as a single unit, with the hands remaining passive. He keeps his wrist firm during the stroke. And he strikes on the upstroke. Price uses more of a pendulum motion than Aoki, swinging the putter smoothly and rhythmically back and forth.

Making a smooth, flowing stroke is not a problem for most players, witness the golfers who take golf lessons from me. Many have nice fluid strokes. The problem arises when a ball is introduced. The ball for whatever reason hampers the putt. A good drill to help eliminate this problem is to start by taking a normal practice stroke. Then address the ball, close your eyes, and repeat the stroke-letting the ball get in the way. The drill makes the real stroke more like the practice one.

The Follow-Through

During the follow-through, Aoki brings the head of the putter back into a square position at impact. His head remains perfectly still throughout the stroke. Aoki remains virtually motionless afterwards, careful that the slightest movement doesn't affect his putt. His head stays still except to follow the ball well after the stroke.

Price keeps his left wrist locked in position through the hitting zone and into the follow- through. He accelerates the putter-head through impact and makes sure his follow- through is as long as his backswing. He, too, keeps his head as steady as possible through the stroke. And he keeps his eyes fixed on the spot where the ball was well after the stroke.

Despite their different styles, both players remain practically motionless after the putt is made. It is imperative to making a good putt. Lifting your head too soon when putting can throw off your putt. The Show Me The Money Drill we covered in last week's golf tips is great for this flaw.

The Show Me the Money drill works for three reasons. It forces you to keep your eyes steady, helping to stabilize your whole body. It prevents you from lifting out of your stance prematurely. And because you're focused on the coin and not the ball, it inclines you to make a nice clean stroke through the ball.

Conclusion

If you want to lower your golf handicap, you need to improve your putting. Nearly half of the strokes made during a full round of golf are putts. Cutting down on your putts will lower your scores and golf handicap. Of course, not everyone will have the same putting style. But one thing remains true: there's no substitute for a sound putting stroke-irrespective of how it looks.
